VOLCANOES, WATERFALLS AND… LLAMAS – WELCOME TO ECUADORIAN ANDES

The Andean region is the most visited region in Ecuador. It covers highlands, cloudy forests, active volcanoes and thermal baths. The breathtaking nature and well developed tourist infrastructure attract foreign and local tourists. In this region you can expect a good accommodation base, many culinary options and various activities organized by the travel agencies. In this post I show you pictures from three amazing places that you cannot skip while traveling in this region: Quilotoa, Baños and Cotopaxi National Park.

QUILOTOA

Quilotoa is a water-filled volcano’s caldera at the height of almost 4000 m. The turquoise water and steep rocky slopes make it a breathtaking site.  This is a magnificent place not only for hiking but also to slow down the pace and think about the respect to the nature. The strong winds and the immense feeling of the space are guaranteed.

BAÑOS

Baños is a mecca for travelers seeking outdoor activities as well as hot springs’ lovers. The small village is located in a valley of waterfalls, around 4 hours from Quito. The activities like canyoning, mountain bicycling or bungee jumping are one of the best in the world. The network of water trails crossing the mountains surrounding Baños makes endless opportunities to increase the adrenalin’s level. Do you know the most famous swing in the word? Yes, this one from Nation Geographic is located exactly here, in Baños. For those who prefer calmer activities, Baños offers the volcanic hot waters, magnificent waterfalls and fresh sugar cane juice.

COTOPAXI NATIONAL PARK

The volcanoes have fascinated me since I remember. And seeing the real, active volcano was one of my dreams, which came true here in Ecuador. And I have to add that not just once :) To the south of Quito lies the Avenue of the Volcanoes with the one of the highest active volcano in the word Cotopaxi (5897 m). If you like climbing and are advanced user of mountaineering gear you would love to climb this peak. If you are not prepared (as I was not :)), enjoying the stunning panoramas from down below is a wonderful experience. The great and time efficient way to explore this region is Tren de los Volcanes. In this journey, the train with the guide takes you across the Andes from Quito to Boliche. Besides the captivating view of Cotopaxi - Pichincha, Atacazo, Pasochoa, La Viudita, Rumiñahui will accompany the train on their route. In addition to that, you will try local food, take part in a traditional dance and take a walk to discover the fauna and flora of the Cotopaxi National Park.
Those, who like my husband ^^ came to South America to meet one particular species, will be fully satisfied after visiting the Ecuadorian mountains. Llamas, Alpacas and Vicuñas we love all of you...  ^^

I hope that my pictures will inspire you to go there yourself!
